He had failed to find any Players Number Three cigarettes to send Belgion but was posting him a revised copy of Spain: A Modern History by Salvador de Madariaga. His assessment of it was to prove prophetic: ‘It is not a book that is going to please either the extreme Left or the extreme Right. Madariaga’s political standpoint being that of an enlightened Liberal really means that he is liable to be attacked on either side.’

Belgion was also in touch with another friend, C.S. Lewis, who was a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. He was not yet well known for his Narnia books (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe would not appear until 1950) but The Screwtape Letters, an epistolary exchange between a senior demon and his nephew, was published in 1942 and Belgion wrote to congratulate him on it. Lewis sent a warm reply in February 1943, writing in neat black handwriting on a tiny scrap of paper. The note took nearly two months to reach Belgion and was filled with literary titbits and book recommendations.

All you have done and gone through at an age when you might feel yourself excused has made a deep impression – in fact you are become rather a hero … As for news – I suppose you mean literary news which is the only kind available – I don’t know that I have much to tell. There seem to be very few good young poets: nothing to compare with last years’s crop. Auden (I believe and partly hope) is ceasing to be a name to conjure with … The outstanding Xtran [?] book of the moment is Midnight Hour by ‘Nicodemus’ but I haven’t read it – you know I never have read the book of the moment. Novel-reading and writing appears to be in a v. bad state: music v. flourishing, … Crocuses and snowdrops are showing in Addison’s Walk, glad you liked Screwtape. Blessings, yrs, CS Lewis
